What I’m watching —
The River Runner (Netflix, Amazon, more options). This jumped to the top of my to-watch list, thanks to Brad Ludden of First Descents, a world-class waterman in his own right and associate producer on this film. Here’s the trailer. Kudos to director Rush Sturges (@rushsturges), writers Thayer Walker (@inkdwell), Corinna Halloran (@corinnahalloran), and the whole team. This Outside feature by Thayer and Scott Lindgren, the documentary’s protagonist, became a model for the film: “After a Hard Diagnosis, One Athlete Learns to Soften Up.”

Short article I’m reading —
Essential Life-Learnings from 14 Years of Brain Pickingsby Maria Popova (@brainpicker). The key takeaway is so important and yet so easy to forget. I read this twice in the past week.

What I’m listening to —
Mangaliso(YouTube, Spotify) by Bongeziwe Mabandla (@Bongeziwe).

Book I’m revisiting —
The Lessons of History by Will and Ariel Durant. This short and powerful book was first recommended to me by investor Ray Dalio. At fewer than 150 pages, it can be digested in a few sittings and offers an impressive overview of human nature and the rise and fall of civilizations. The prose is also beautiful. Here’s the official book description: “A concise survey of the culture and civilization of mankind, The Lessons of History is the result of a lifetime of research from Pulitzer Prize–winning historians Will and Ariel Durant. With their accessible compendium of philosophy and social progress, the Durants take us on a journey through history, exploring the possibilities and limitations of humanity over time.”

What I’m celebrating —
Johns Hopkins, Yale, and NYU are teaming up to tackle a key bottleneck that will arise as psychedelics come to marketby Yeji Jesse Lee (@jesse_yeji).

This has been in the works for a while, and I couldn’t be more excited. Here are a few snippets from the above piece: “As psychedelics treatments move closer to regulatory approval, there’s an issue looming in the industry: the lack of trained professionals who can handle such powerful compounds. … The goal is to have the curriculum certified by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, which would create a pathway to make the program available to medical schools as an accredited specialty all across the country. … The idea is that the program will be designed in a way so that parts of the curriculum can help train other healthcare professionals—like therapists, nurses, and physician assistants—and even be provided as material in medical schools.”

The Saisei Foundation, which I started in 2018, is thrilled to be involved. Braveheart (Amazon, YouTube, Apple TV). I came across this on DirecTV at an Airbnb while writing this edition of 5-Bullet Friday. I still remember where and when I saw Braveheart for the first time. It never gets old.

Passage I’m pondering —
“Therefore, dear Sir, love your solitude and try to sing out with the pain it causes you. For those who are near you are far away, you write, and this shows that the space around you is beginning to grow vast. And if what is near you is far away, then your vastness is already among the stars and is very great; be happy about your growth, in which of course you can’t take anyone with you, and be gentle with those who stay behind; be confident and calm in front of them and don’t torment them with your doubts and don’t frighten them with your faith or joy, which they wouldn’t be able to comprehend. Seek out some simple and true feeling of what you have in common with them, which doesn’t necessarily have to alter when you yourself change again and again; when you see them, love life in a form that is not your own and be indulgent toward those who are growing old, who are afraid of the aloneness that you trust. Avoid providing material for the drama that is always stretched tight between parents and children; it uses up much of the children’s strength and wastes the love of the elders, which acts and warms even if it doesn’t comprehend.
