5-Bullet Friday
The latest from author and investor Tim Ferriss

Hi All!

Here is your weekly dose of 5-Bullet Friday, a list of what I’m pondering and exploring.

Videos I’m enjoying

Devon Larratt vs. “The Mountain” from Game of Thrones (225 lbs vs. 419 lbs)
Devon Larratt Best Moments
#265: Devon Larratt: Arm Wrestling on the Lex Fridman (@lexfridman) podcast.

Essay I’m reading and rereading

The Top Idea in Your Mindby Paul Graham (@paulg). This is arguably the most important short reading I’ve done in a while.

Book review I’m reading

Book Review: Raise A Genius!by Scott Alexander (@slatestarcodex) of Slate Star Codex fame, now writing at Astral Codex Ten. Hat tip to R.R. of Most Recommended Books. Here’s the opening paragraph: “A few months ago, I learned about Laszlo Polgar, the man who trained all three of his daughters to be chess grandmasters. He claimed he could make any child a genius just by teaching them using his special methods. I was pretty upset because, although he had a book called Raise A Genius, it was hard to find and only available in Hungarian and Esperanto.”

Documentary I’m watching

The Great Dance by Craig Foster and Damon Foster. This was recommended to me by an excellent tracker. The best video I could find that’s viewable from the US was on Facebook. Be forewarned that it’s very grainy and very bizarre. This is the only footage of successful persistence hunting that I’ve ever seen, and filmmaker Craig Foster is also the diver featured in My Octopus Teacher. Here is the official description: “A story of three San hunters at their most extreme limits of endurance, culminating in ‘the Chasing Hunt’—a ritual that has never before been revealed to the world outside of the Kalahari. Discover the extraordinary spiritual relationship between the hunter and the hunted. Marvel at the incredible wealth of knowledge of the San people about the world around them.” Few of you will watch all of this, but since this newsletter promises weird things, here’s your serving for the week.

Quote I’m pondering

“You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.”
Kahlil Gibran

And, as always, please give me feedback on Twitter. Which bullet above is your favorite? What do you want more or less of? Other suggestions? Please let me know. Just send a tweet to @tferriss and put #5BulletFriday at the end so I can find it.

Have a wonderful weekend, all.

Much love to you and yours,

Tim

Welcome to another episode of The Tim Ferriss Show, where it is my job to deconstruct world-class performers to tease out the routines, habits, et cetera that you can apply to your own life.

In this episode, past podcast guest Cal Newport interviews me for an article he ended up writing for The New Yorker titled “Revisiting ‘The 4-Hour Workweek’: How Tim Ferriss’s 2007 manifesto anticipated our current moment of professional upheaval.”

Cal is the author of seven books, including, most recently, Deep Work, Digital Minimalism, and A World Without Email. He is also a contributing writer for The New Yorker and the host of the Deep Questions podcast.

You can find my interview with Cal at tim.blog/calnewport, and you can find the 2007 talk at SXSW that launched everything at tim.blog/sxsw.

Hi All,

Below is your weekly list of what I’m pondering and exploring.

Given recent events, my heart also goes out to each and every person navigating the depths of sadness, anger, and fear right now. I’ve shortened the name of the newsletter to “5-BF” for this week as a show of solidarity.

What I’m learning more about

Bionic Reading (@bionicreading). This is the first innovation related to faster reading that has impressed me in a long time. In simplest terms, it helps you convert text to make your fixation points more efficient. Thank you to reader Sam McRoberts for referring this to me on Twitter.

TED Talk I’m watching

Can we create new senses for humans? by David Eagleman (@davideagleman). Official description: “As humans, we can perceive less than a ten-trillionth of all light waves. ‘Our experience of reality,’ says neuroscientist David Eagleman, ‘is constrained by our biology.’ He wants to change that. His research into our brain processes has led him to create new interfaces—such as a sensory vest—to take in previously unseen information about the world around us.” I’ve previously recommended David’s Sum: Forty Tales from the Afterlives, which is a collection of 40 thought exercises on the nature of existence, reality, perception, death, pain, boredom, and more.

Scientist I’m studying

Christof Koch. From Wikipedia: “Christof Koch is a German-American neurophysiologist and computational neuroscientist best known for his work on the neural basis of consciousness. He is the president and chief scientist of the Allen Institute for Brain Science in Seattle. From 1986 until 2013, he was a professor at the California Institute of Technology.”

Audiobook I’m listening to

Conscious: A Brief Guide to the Fundamental Mystery of the Mind by Annaka Harris (@annakaharris). This is a delightful listen or read, and it’s short. The audiobook runs 2 hours and 22 minutes. It’s the most gifted book of one of my smartest friends, and the preceding two items came from its pages. Here’s part of the official description: “What is consciousness? How does it arise? And why does it exist? We take our experience of being in the world for granted. But the very existence of consciousness raises profound questions: Why would any collection of matter in the universe be conscious? How are we able to think about this? And why should we? In this wonderfully accessible audiobook, Annaka Harris guides us through the evolving definitions, philosophies, and scientific findings that probe our limited understanding of consciousness. Where does it reside, and what gives rise to it? Could it be an illusion, or a universal property of all matter? As we try to understand consciousness, we must grapple with how to define it and, in the age of artificial intelligence, who or what might possess it.”

Quote I’m pondering once again

“I remember my grandfather telling me how each of us must live with a full measure of loneliness that is inescapable, and we must not destroy ourselves with our passion to escape the aloneness.”
Jim Harrison

And, as always, please give me feedback on Twitter. Which of the above is your favorite? What do you want more or less of? Other suggestions? Please let me know. Just send a tweet to @tferriss and put #5BF at the end so I can find it.

Much love to you and yours,

Tim

5-Bullet Friday
The latest from author and investor Tim Ferriss

Hi All!

Here is your weekly dose of 5-Bullet Friday, a list of what I’m pondering and exploring.

What I’m watching

Planet Earth II “Grasslands” episode (Amazon, YouTube, Apple TV), hosted by David Attenborough (@davidattenborough). The episode’s description: “Grasslands cover one quarter of all land and support the vast gatherings of wildlife, but to survive here, animals must endure the most hostile seasonal changes on the planet. From Asia’s bizarre-looking saiga antelope to the giant anteaters of Brazil, grassland animals have adapted in extraordinary ways to cope with these extremes. In the flooded Okavango, lions take on formidable buffalo in epic battles; on the savannah, bee-eaters take advantage of elephants to help catch insects; and on the freezing northern tundra, caribou embark on great migrations shadowed by hungry Arctic wolves.”

Audiobook I’m listening to

Green Hills of Africa by Ernest Hemingway. I haven’t read Hemingway in more than a decade, but this specific nonfiction book was recommended to me by one of the smartest people I know. The writing, and commentary on writers and writing itself, is outstanding. It helps if you have some familiarity with hunting, but it’s not required. Before reading, I would suggest taking a few minutes to glance at 1–2 pictures of a few recurring animals: kudu, sable antelope, oryx, wildebeest, white rhino, and water buffalo. Be forewarned that the original publication date was 1935, and some of the language is dated and will be offensive to most. From the description: “His second major venture into nonfiction (after Death in the Afternoon, 1932), Green Hills of Africa is Ernest Hemingway’s lyrical journal of a month on safari in the great game country of East Africa, where he and his wife, Pauline, journeyed in December of 1933. Hemingway’s well-known interest in—and fascination with—big-game hunting is magnificently captured in this evocative account of his trip. In examining the poetic grace of the chase, and the ferocity of the kill, Hemingway also looks inward, seeking to explain the lure of the hunt and the primal undercurrent that comes alive on the plains of Africa. Yet Green Hills of Africa is also an impassioned portrait of the glory of the African landscape and of the beauty of a wilderness that was, even then, being threatened by the incursions of man.”

Podcast episode I’m listening to

Matthew Inman and Elan Lee: Invite Everyone to The Party (Apple Podcasts, Spotify) on Inc.’s What I Know podcast. Here is the official description: “Christine Lagorio-Chafkin talks to Matthew Inman and Elan Lee—founders of Exploding Kittens—about how they founded their company, when to give up on a potentially good idea, and the $1 million dollar meow.” To better understand the scope of Exploding Kittens, here’s a paragraph from a recent announcement: “Exploding Kittens is a leading game and entertainment company with a mission to inspire people to connect, laugh, and play fun games in the physical world. After initially seeking to raise $10K through Kickstarter, the Exploding Kittens campaign raised $8.7M in 30 days from 219,000 backers. To date, Exploding Kittens is the #1 most-backed project in Kickstarter history and has sold over 18 million games.”

What I’m re-reading yet again (very short)

On Needing to Find Something to Worry About.” This brief blog post provides me with an afterglow of extended calm for at least a few hours, and it can sometimes last a few days. The quote from Donald Winnicott packs a wallop, so don’t miss it.

Quote I’m pondering

“These are times in which a genius would wish to live. It is not in the still calm of life, or in the repose of a pacific station, that great characters are formed. The habits of a vigorous mind are formed in contending with difficulties. Great necessities call out great virtues.”
Abigail Adams, Letter to John Quincy Adams dated January 19th, 1780

And, as always, please give me feedback on Twitter. Which bullet above is your favorite? What do you want more or less of? Other suggestions? Please let me know. Just send a tweet to @tferriss and put #5BulletFriday at the end so I can find it.

Have a wonderful weekend, all.

Much love to you and yours,

Tim

P.S. Deal of the Week — LMNT, tasty electrolyte drink mix!

I’ve stocked up on boxes and boxes of LMNT, and I usually use 1–2 packs per day to add electrolytes. These days, as I’m logging more outdoor and hiking hours, LMNT has been critical, especially in hot temperatures when I’m sweating. Electrolytes are essential minerals that keep you moving and prevent dehydration symptoms like headaches, muscle cramps, and fatigue. They support hundreds of processes within the body. I add electrolytes for many reasons: because I over-hydrate compulsively while stuck at home (which dilutes electrolytes and leads me to feel tired), because I’m on a low-carb diet, because I’ve lost electrolytes through exercise, etc. It’s simply cheap hydration insurance that tastes great.

Developed by Robb Wolf and his coaches, each serving delivers a meaningful dose of electrolytes without the garbage—no sugar, no artificial ingredients, no coloring, no junk. LMNT is used by three Navy SEAL teams, as prescribed by their master chief, Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr (5x CrossFit Games winner), dozens of NFL and NBA teams, and others—like me—who are looking for a physical and mental edge. My favorite flavor is Citrus Salt, which, as a side note, you can use to make a kick-ass, no-sugar margarita. Grapefruit is a close second, so I alternate the two.

Find your favorite flavor with a free LMNT Sample Pack, included with any purchase for a limited time. And if you don’t love your purchase for any reason, my friends at LMNT offer a no-questions-asked refund policy. This special offer is available here >>> DrinkLMNT.com/Tim.

Short description for the episode is below.

🎧 New podcast episode:
Primatologist Isabel Behncke on Play, Sexual Selection, and Lessons from Following Bonobos for 3,000 Kilometers in the Jungles of Congo

Isabel Behncke (@IsabelBehncke) is a field primatologist and applied evolutionary ethologist who studies social behavior in animals (including humans) to understand our urgent challenges with each other and the planet.

Isabel grew up at the foothills of the Andes mountains in Chile, where she developed a life-long love for nature and wildness as well as culture and the arts. An explorer-scientist, she is the first South American to follow great apes in the wild in Africa. She walked more than 3,000 km (~1864 miles) in the jungles of Congo for her field research observing the social lives of wild bonobo apes, who, together with chimpanzees, are our closest living relatives. Isabel documented how bonobos play freely in nature and has extended this research to study how human apes play—at Burning Man, other festivals, and in everyday life. Isabel has observed how play is at the root of creativity, social bonding, and healthy development, findings that have relevance in education, innovation, complex risk assessments, and freedom.

Isabel holds a BSc in Zoology and an MSc in Nature Conservation, both from University College London, an MPhil in Human Evolution from Cambridge University, and a PhD in Evolutionary Anthropology from Oxford University. She has won several distinctions for her public communication and knowledge integration, which range in formats from TED, WIRED, the UN, BBC, and Nat Geo to rural schools in Patagonia and traveling buses of schoolchildren in Congo. She is a senior fellow of the Gruter Institute, a TED fellow, and currently advises the Chilean government, working on long-term strategies in science, technology, innovation, and knowledge for Chile’s president. She can be found in Chile and New York City.

5-Bullet Friday
The latest from author and investor Tim Ferriss

Hi All!

Here is your weekly dose of 5-Bullet Friday, a list of what I’m pondering and exploring.

Writing advice I’m enjoying

Don’t just write words. Write music.I think about this type of cadence, musicality, and readability a lot when writing.

Artist whose work I’m loving

Rafael Grassetti (@rafagrassetti). Rafael, better known as Raf, has been described as “one of the best-known digital sculptors in the world” and is Art Director at Sony for the God of War franchise. You can get a taste of his incredible work on Twitter, Instagram, and his website. Thanks to everyone who recommended Raf’s work in response to my tweet about favorite 3D artists.

Preface to the next two bullets: I watched and read all of these prior to the related NASA news from yesterday, Thursday, June 9th (NYT: “NASA Plans to Join U.F.O. Research Efforts”). I’m fascinated by several aspects of the below, including verified government disinformation campaigns related to new warfare technologies, rampant forgeries and magical thinking, the susceptibility of Americans to conspiracy theories, and… just how hard it is to explain certain cases (e.g., the USS Nimitz, which is covered at length by the docuseries in the next bullet).

Series I’m watching

UFO. I initially dismissed this. I then revisited the series when I noticed that J.J. Abrams was involved. Before you decide to skip it, consider watching the short trailer for pure fun. Here’s the official description: “A four-part docu-series from J.J. AbramsBad Robot and Glen Zipper exploring our fascination with unidentified flying objects, and what clandestine influence the American government, lucrative private companies, and the military may have in shielding the truth behind [UFOs] to further their own agendas.” This series includes interviews with former senators, former military intelligence officers, New York Times reporters, Navy pilots, and many more. From coverage in Decider: “A big chunk of Episode 2 is dedicated to the former Nevada senator and former Senate Majority Leader’s interest in studying paranormal phenomena. I reiterate: this is wild. Usually these specials are populated with ufologists, small press authors, small town abductees, and people who become memes because how could they not become a meme?” I’ll warn you in advance that Episode 2 also features a detour into the bizarre history of Skinwalker Ranch. Lots of headscratchers in this docuseries, which is part of the appeal.

Articles I’m reading

How the Pentagon Started Taking U.F.O.s Seriouslyand The Unexplained Phenomena of the U.F.O. Report,” both for The New Yorker by Gideon Lewis-Kraus. Related to the above, Don’t Dismiss the Alien Hypothesisby Christopher Mellon (@ChrisKMellon). Christopher Mellon spent nearly 20 years in the U.S. Intelligence Community, including serving as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and the Minority Staff Director of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Quote I’m pondering

“I would rather have questions that can’t be answered than answers that can’t be questioned.”
Richard Feynman, theoretical physicist and recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1965

And, as always, please give me feedback on Twitter. Which bullet above is your favorite? What do you want more or less of? Other suggestions? Please let me know. Just send a tweet to @tferriss and put #5BulletFriday at the end so I can find it.

Have a wonderful weekend, all.

🎧 New podcast episode:
New Insights from Sam Harris, Dr. Peter Attia, Ramit Sethi, and Elizabeth Gilbert

Welcome to another episode of The Tim Ferriss Show, where it is usually my job to deconstruct world-class performers to tease out the routines, habits, et cetera that you can apply to your own life.

This episode is something different. It’s an experimental format that I’m super excited about.

This is an episode that scratches an itch I’ve had for years. I am not always able to listen to every great podcast episode out there, even when they are by some of my closest friends. The answer to my predicament was to ask them to send me a top segment from their podcast that I could listen to and—more importantly—also share with you, my dear listeners.

My team edited them together, and here we are! This episode is a compilation of 15-to-30-minute clips from some the best podcasters in the world and certainly some of my favorites.

At the beginning of each clip, you will hear an intro from the host and where to find their work and podcast. To close, I’ll also share one of my favorite clips from an episode of The Tim Ferriss Show.

You can view this episode as a buffet, and I strongly suggest that you check out the shows included. If you like my podcast, you will very likely enjoy the featured shows in this episode.

And before you go: Do you like this format? If so, please let me know on Twitter at @tferriss and also mention @TeamTimFerriss. Whether we continue this series or not depends on you.

Please enjoy!

This episode is broughtto you by Athletic Greens. I get asked all the time, “If you could use only one supplement, what would it be?” My answer is usually AG1 by Athletic Greens, my all-in-one nutritional insurance. I recommended it in The 4-Hour Body in 2010 and did not get paid to do so. I do my best with nutrient-dense meals, of course, but AG further covers my bases with vitamins, minerals, and whole-food-sourced micronutrients that support gut health and the immune system.

Right now, Athletic Greens is offering you their Vitamin D Liquid Formula free with your first subscription purchase—a vital nutrient for a strong immune system and strong bones. Visit AthleticGreens.com/Tim to claim this special offer today and receive the free Vitamin D Liquid Formula (and five free travel packs) with your first subscription purchase! That’s up to a one-year supply of Vitamin D as added value when you try their delicious and comprehensive all-in-one daily greens product.

This episode is also brought to you by
Helix Sleep! Helix was selected as the #1 overall mattress of 2020 by GQ magazine, Wired, Apartment Therapy, and many others. With Helix, there’s a specific mattress to meet each and every body’s unique comfort needs. Just take their quiz—only two minutes to complete—that matches your body type and sleep preferences to the perfect mattress for you. They have a 10-year warranty, and you get to try it out for a hundred nights, risk-free. They’ll even pick it up from you if you don’t love it. And now, Helix is offering up to 200 dollars off all mattress orders plus two free pillows at HelixSleep.com/Tim.

This episode is also brought to you by
Allform! If you’ve been listening to the podcast for a while, you’ve probably heard me talk about Helix Sleep mattresses, which I’ve been using since 2017. They also launched a company called Allform that makes premium, customizable sofas and chairs shipped right to your door—at a fraction of the cost of traditional stores. You can pick your fabric (and they’re all spill, stain, and scratch resistant), the sofa color, the color of the legs, and the sofa size and shape to make sure it’s perfect for you and your home.

Allform arrives in just 3–7 days, and you can assemble it yourself in a few minutes—no tools needed. To find your perfect sofa and receive 20% off all orders, check out Allform.com/Tim.

5-Bullet Friday
The latest from author and investor Tim Ferriss

Hi All!

Here is your weekly dose of 5-Bullet Friday, a list of what I’m pondering and exploring. If you enjoy it, please feel free to forward this along to friends.

What is helping me sleep

WAOAW Sleep Mask. This has become my favorite sleep mask. The WAOAW is a contoured mask that removes all pressure from the eyes, and it’s been added to my list of “things I didn’t know I needed.” The design also blocks much more light than conventional masks. Special thanks to my girlfriend for the spot-on gift. Grumpy Tim is good for no one.

What I’m reading

A South Texan’s Wild Quest to Break a National Birding Record by Will McCarthy (@wrmccart) for Texas Monthly. Subheadline: “When she began her year-long bird-spotting adventure, Tiffany Kersten was lost and lonely. She ended up achieving a major milestone—and finding her way.” I’ve been on a nature kick and wanted to keep feeding the furnace. This provided a nice boost, and I’m already brainstorming new adventures…

Album I’m listening to while working

I Choose Noise (YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music), studio album by Hybrid (@HybridBandUK). If you want to whet your appetite, “Last Man Standing” and “I Choose Noise” are two good tracks to start with.

Shoes I’m enjoying for hiking several hours a day

Cloudventure from On (@on_running). I have this pair in Black/Reseda. From On’s website: “The Cloudventure is a lightweight trail running shoe, built to excel in demanding outdoor conditions.” I’ve been pounding the hell out of these, and they’ve allowed me to hike more than I have in years without any pain from plantar fasciitis. I’ll be adding in rucking soon then slowly progressing to trail running, which I loved when I was younger. Related reading: “The Painless Path to Endurance.”

Quote I’m pondering

“Forgiveness is accepting the apology you will never receive.”
Shawne Duperon (hat tip to Mark Goulston)

And, as always, please give me feedback on Twitter. Which bullet above is your favorite? What do you want more or less of? Other suggestions? Please let me know. Just send a tweet to @tferriss and put #5BulletFriday at the end so I can find it.

Have a wonderful weekend, all.

Much love to you and yours,

Tim

Here is your weekly dose of 5-Bullet Friday, a list of what I’m pondering and exploring. If you enjoy it, please feel free to forward to friends.

What I’m listening to once again

The Hero’s Adventure from The Power of Myth with Joseph Campbell and Bill Moyers (Audible for audio, Amazon for video). The first episode of this six-part series is simply incredible, and I found it oddly and profoundly calming. Here’s the description: “Forty years ago, renowned scholar Joseph Campbell sat down with veteran journalist Bill Moyers for a series of interviews that became one of the most enduringly popular programs ever on PBS. In dialogues that adroitly span millennia of history and far-flung geography, the two men discuss myths as metaphors for human experience and the path to transcendence.” You can listen to the full series on Audible or watch on Amazon. I highly recommend the entire series. You won’t be disappointed.

Series I’m watching

Under the Banner of Heaven. Starring Andrew Garfield, Sam Worthington, Daisy Edgar-Jones (@daisyedgarjones), FX’s Under the Banner of Heaven, the limited series inspired by the nonfiction bestseller by Jon Krakauer, follows the murder of Brenda Wright Lafferty and her baby daughter in a suburb in the Salt Lake Valley. As Detective Jeb Pyre investigates events that transpired, he uncovers buried truths about the violent consequences of unyielding faith. The trailer gives you a good taste of the production value. I found everything about this series—writing, casting, directing, cinematography, interweaving of history, and more—to be incredibly good. Be forewarned that the material is dark.

Blog post I’m reading

The Rise of the Shaman Bro (and his eventual demise).” This succinct post is laughably accurate. It covers a few important subtleties, including the very real and COVID-driven Promoter Bro >>> Shaman Bro phenomenon. The same ecosystem disruption can explain the proliferation of another archetype I’ll call “Yogauasca Chick.” Same-same but different. Equally dangerous. A few quick recommendations if you’re ever in the market for shamans/guides/sitters:

1) If they don’t do a medical intake, including asking about current medications and family history (e.g., schizophrenia), avoid them.
2) If they call themselves a “shaman,” they are not anything resembling a shaman. Avoid.
3) Ask how they’ve handled adverse events or people truly freaking out: screaming, getting violent, etc. If they say they’ve never had adverse events, they are lying, delusional, and/or inexperienced. Anyone who has had 10+ years of experience will have stories of craziness and how they successfully or unsuccessfully handled it. Ditto for any really good ER doc or MD, which isn’t a coincidence.

Article I’m reading

Minding matterby Adam Frank (@AdamFrank4). Here is an excerpt:

Like most physicists, I learned how to ignore the weirdness of quantum physics. ‘Shut up and calculate!’ (the dictum of the American physicist David Mermin) works fine if you are trying to get 100 percent on your Advanced Quantum Theory homework or building a laser. But behind quantum mechanics’ unequaled calculational precision lie profound, stubbornly persistent questions about what those quantum rules imply about the nature of reality – including our place in it.

Those questions are well-known in the physics community, but perhaps our habit of shutting up has been a little too successful. A century of agnosticism about the true nature of matter hasn’t found its way deeply enough into other fields, where materialism still appears to be the most sensible way of dealing with the world and, most of all, with the mind. Some neuroscientists think that they’re being precise and grounded by holding tightly to materialist credentials. Molecular biologists, geneticists, and many other types of researchers – as well as the nonscientist public – have been similarly drawn to materialism’s seeming finality. But this conviction is out of step with what we physicists know about the material world – or rather, what we don’t know.” (Read the full piece here.)

Poem I’m pondering

My worn out sandals hang high
From the bare wall,
And dawn’s brought
Spring snow that makes
The blossoms open;
Those twenty years of pilgrimage
I made to China?
Better to have slept
Here in this mountain hut.

Koken Myokai

And, as always, please give me feedback on Twitter. Which bullet above is your favorite? What do you want more or less of? Other suggestions? Please let me know. Just send a tweet to @tferriss and put #5BulletFriday at the end so I can find it.

Have a wonderful weekend, all.

Much love to you and yours,

Tim

P.S. Deal of the Week — Levels!

I wrote about the health benefits of using continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) more than ten years ago in The 4-Hour Body. At the time, CGMs were primitive and hard to use. Levels has now made this technology, and the unique insights that come from it, easy and available to everyone. Levels is making glucose monitoring simple, helping you see how food affects your health through real-time feedback. I started tracking my glucose years ago to learn more about what I should and shouldn’t be eating (including quantities, time of day, etc.), based on objective data from my own, unique physiology. Keeping my blood sugar stable is critical to my daily and long-term health and performance goals. Furthermore, poor glucose control is associated with a number of chronic conditions like diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, and obesity. It’s important.

Levels has a world-class team and group of advisors backing them, including names like multi-time podcast guest Dr. Dominic D’Agostino; Dr. David Sinclair, who runs the well-known longevity lab out of Harvard; and former SpaceX engineer Josh Clemente, whom you may have heard on Kevin Rose’s podcast. To learn more about Levels and using a CGM to help personalize and optimize your diet, click here. At the link, you will see next steps to join Levels at the top, and you can scroll down to learn about features and much more.

🎧 New podcast episode:
Legendary Comedian Bill Burr — Fear{less} with Tim Ferriss

Welcome to another episode of The Tim Ferriss Show, where it is my job to deconstruct world-class performers to tease out the routines, habits, et cetera that you can apply to your own life.

You’ll get plenty of that in this special episode, which features my interview with Bill Burr from my 2017 TV Show Fear{less}. The “less” is in parentheses because the objective is to teach you to fear less, not to be fearless.

Fear{less} features in-depth, long-form conversations with top performers, focusing on how they’ve overcome fears and made hard decisions, embracing discomfort and thinking big.

It was produced by Wild West Productions, and I worked with them to make both the video and audio available to you for free, my dear listeners. You can find the video of this episode on YouTube.com/TimFerriss, and eventually you’ll be able to see all episodes for free at YouTube.com/TimFerriss.

Spearheaded by actor/producer and past podcast guest Vince Vaughn, Wild West Productions has produced a string of hit movies including The Internship, Couples Retreat, Four Christmases, and The Break-Up.

In 2020, Wild West produced the comedy The Opening Act, starring Jimmy O. Yang and Cedric The Entertainer. In addition to Fear{less}, their television credits include Undeniable with Joe Buck, ESPN’s 30 for 30 episode about the ’85 Bears, and the Netflix animated show F is for Family.

Please enjoy!

5-Bullet Friday
The latest from author and investor Tim Ferriss

Hi All!

Here is your weekly dose of 5-Bullet Friday, a list of what I’m pondering and exploring. If you enjoy it, please feel free to forward to friends.

Device that has improved my sleep

PSO-RITE for psoas muscle release. Recommended by multiple people in this Twitter thread on iliacus self-release.

What I’m watching

Free Guy (94% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes). Free Guy stars and was produced by Ryan Reynolds (@VancityReynolds). The movie is directed by Shawn Levy (@ShawnLevyDirect) from a screenplay by Matt Lieberman (@elprotecto) and Zak Penn (@zakpenn). Here is the official description of the movie: “A bank teller (Ryan Reynolds) discovers he is actually a background player in an open-world video game and decides to become the hero of his own story. Now, in a world where there are no limits, he is determined to be the guy who saves his world his way before it’s too late.”

Article I’m reading

My Twelve Rules for Lifeby Russ Roberts (@EconTalker). In particular, I’m thinking about this one:

2. Find something healthy to worship

David Foster Wallace says it well:

Because here’s something else that’s weird but true: in the day-to-day trenches of adult life, there is actually no such thing as atheism. There is no such thing as not worshipping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship. And the compelling reason for maybe choosing some sort of god or spiritual-type thing to worship—be it JC or Allah, be it YHWH or the Wiccan Mother Goddess, or the Four Noble Truths, or some inviolable set of ethical principles—is that pretty much anything else you worship will eat you alive. If you worship money and things, if they are where you tap real meaning in life, then you will never have enough, never feel you have enough. It’s the truth. Worship your body and beauty and sexual allure and you will always feel ugly. And when time and age start showing, you will die a million deaths before they finally grieve you. On one level, we all know this stuff already. It’s been codified as myths, proverbs, clichés, epigrams, parables; the skeleton of every great story. The whole trick is keeping the truth up front in daily consciousness.

But the most important thing to remember is not to worship yourself. Not as easy as it sounds.”

What I’m listening to

Eres para Mí (YouTube, Spotify) by Julieta Venegas (@julietav). Feeling sapped by an ever-increasing creep of nihilism in the world (dramatic, I know)? This is the type of track that helps me find an optimistic foothold. Good medicine for challenging times and good medicine for seeing the silver linings all around us. Things are generally better than we think.

Quote I’m pondering

“The road to hell is not paved with good intentions. It is paved with lack of intention.”
Dr. Gabor Maté
For more from Gabor, start here.

I add electrolytes for many reasons: because I over-hydrate compulsively while stuck at a laptop (which dilutes electrolytes and leads me to feel tired), because I’m on a low-carb diet, because I’ve lost electrolytes through exercise, etc.

🎧 New podcast episode:
Hamilton Morris and Dr. Mark Plotkin — Exploring the History of Psychoactive Substances, Synthetic vs. Natural Options, Microdosing, 5-MeO-DMT, The “Drunken Monkey” Hypothesis, Timothy Leary’s Legacy, and More

Welcome to The Tim Ferriss Show, where it is usually my job to deconstruct world-class performers, to tease out their routines, habits, et cetera that you can apply to your own life.

This time around, we have a very special edition featuring two of your favorite guests: Dr. Mark Plotkin and Hamilton Morris.

Mark takes over my duties as host and interviews Hamilton for an episode of the Plants of the Gods podcast. You, my dear listeners, are hearing the audio before anyone else, so this is a Tim Ferriss Show exclusive. I’ve previously featured some of my favorite episodes from that show at tim.blog/plantsofthegods. These episodes cover a lot of fascinating ground.

Who is Mark? Mark (@DocMarkPlotkin) is an ethnobotanist who serves as president of the Amazon Conservation Team, which has partneredwith ~80 tribes to map and improve management and protection of ~100 million acres of ancestral rainforests. He is best known to the general public as the author of the book Tales of a Shaman’s Apprentice, one of the most popular books ever written about the rainforest. His most recent book is The Amazon: What Everyone Needs to Know. You can find my interview with Mark at tim.blog/markplotkin.

And the guest today is Hamilton Morris. Hamilton (@HamiltonMorris) is a chemist, filmmaker, and science journalist. A graduate of The New School, he conducts chemistry research at Saint Joseph’s University. Hamilton is the writer and director of the documentary series Hamilton’s Pharmacopeia, in which he explores the chemistry and traditions surrounding psychoactive drugs. You can find my most recent interview with him at tim.blog/hamilton.

This is a tightly packed 60-minute interview. Mark and Hamilton cover the history of different psychoactive substances; Timothy Leary’s legacy; the “drunken monkey” hypothesis; conservation; microdosing; the differences between 5-MeO-DMT and DMT; a disease that afflicts people who smoke enormous quantities of cannabis, causing them to vomit continuously and only find relief from their nausea by taking a hot shower (yes, really); the impact of the placebo effect; a synthetic vs. a natural product; the role of ritual; and much, much more.

Please enjoy!

This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens.

5-Bullet Friday
The latest from author and investor Tim Ferriss

Hi All!

Here is your weekly dose of 5-Bullet Friday, a list of what I’m pondering and exploring. If you enjoy it, please feel free to forward this along to friends.

Short article I’m revisiting

Subtractby Derek Sivers (@sivers), programmer-musician-ringmaster-philosopher. For more of Derek’s wisdom, hilarity, and tactical advice, be sure to check out this and this, both of which are all-time listener favorites. I’m considering rereading my highlights of Four Thousand Weeks to reinforce some of his lessons learned.

What I’m listening to

G.O.A.T. (YouTube, Spotify) by Polyphia (@polyphia). If you want to see another video of how such craziness comes together, check this out. I first heard Polyphia over the sound system at a climbing gym, and I literally jumped off the wall to figure out who was playing. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but I dig ’em for writing.

Study I’m reading

Exogenous Testosterone or Testosterone with Finasteride Increases Bone Mineral Density in Older Men with Low Serum Testosterone.” I’m not a doctor and don’t play one on the Internet, but this was sent to me by a well-respected researcher who focuses a lot on mTOR and other subjects. I take neither drug but found it worth the read. Here is an excerpt of the abstract:

“This finding suggests that dihydrotestosterone is not essential for the beneficial effects of T on BMD in men. In addition, the concomitant administration of F with T appears to attenuate the impact of T therapy on prostate size and PSA and might reduce the chance of benign prostatic hypertrophy or other prostate-related complications in older men on T therapy. These findings have important implications for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in older men with low T levels.”

Documentary I’m watching

The Gatekeepers (Amazon, YouTube, Apple TV). Here is the official description: “Charged with overseeing Israel’s war on terror—both Palestinian and Jewish—the head of the Shin Bet, Israel’s secret service, is present at the crossroad of every decision made. For the first time ever, six former heads of the agency agreed to share their insights and reflect publicly on their actions and decisions. The Gatekeepers offers an exclusive account of the sum of their successes and failures. It validates the reasons that each man individually and the six as a group came to reconsider their hard-line positions and advocate a conciliatory approach toward their enemies based on a two-state solution.” The documentary was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 85th Academy Awards and has a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and The New York Times described it as “essential, eye-opening viewing if you think you understand the Middle East.” You can find the trailer here and read the reception section on Wikipedia to see the broader scope of the response to the film in Israel and elsewhere.

Quote I’m pondering

“The test of all beliefs is their practical effect in life. If it be true that optimism compels the world forward, and pessimism retards it, then it is dangerous to propagate a pessimistic philosophy.”
Helen Keller, Optimism

And, as always, please give me feedback on Twitter. Which bullet above is your favorite? What do you want more or less of? Other suggestions? Please let me know. Just send a tweet to @tferriss and put #5BulletFriday at the end so I can find it.

Complement this edition of 5-Bullet Friday with my interview with Greg McKeown (“How to Master Essentialism”), which covers how to subtract the trivial many and find the essential; this deep-dive interview with the legendary Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine fame; and these astounding card tricks performed by magician and “card mechanic” Richard Turner.

Have a wonderful weekend, all.

Much love to you and yours,

Tim

P.S. Deal of the Week — AG1 by Athletic Greens!

I get asked all the time, “If you could use only one supplement, what would it be?” My answer is usually AG1 by Athletic Greens, my all-in-one nutritional insurance. I recommended it in The 4-Hour Body in 2010 and didn’t get paid to do so. I focus on nutrient-dense meals, of course, but AG1 further covers the nutritional gaps in my diet. Within AG1, you get a high-quality multivitamin and multimineral, pre- and probiotics, adaptogens, greens, and more, providing you a cost-efficient way to consolidate your supplement stack into less than $3.00 per day and less than 60 seconds. Rather than taking multiple pills or products to cover your mental clarity, gut health, immune system, energy, etc., AG1 supports these areas through one daily scoop that tastes great, even with just water… it also makes for the perfect travel companion. After consuming this product for 12 years, I recently chose to invest in Athletic Greens, as I trust their no-compromise approach to ingredient sourcing and appreciate their focus on continuously improving one formula rather than rolling out multiple products to sell you. There is no better time than today to start a new healthy habit, so take advantage of this exclusive offer for 5-Bullet Friday readers: a free 1-year supply of liquid vitamin D + 5 travel packs with your subscription purchase.

5-Bullet Friday
The latest from author and investor Tim Ferriss

Hi All!

Here is your weekly dose of 5-Bullet Friday, a list of what I’m pondering and exploring. If you enjoy it, please feel free to forward this along to friends.

Short video I’m revisiting

My philosophy for a happy life | Sam Berns | TEDxMidAtlantic. This video hit me really hard. Despite some tears, it was exactly the reset I needed. This kid is a total stud. Just watch it, and do not rush. Also, do *not* read the description beforehand, only afterward.

Article I’m reading

Panpsychism is crazy, but it’s also most probably trueby Philip Goff (@Philip_Goff).

Compound I’m studying

Spermidine. Long-ass story, but this pops up on a podcast soon. The conversation provoked a fascination and a lot of worthwhile questions.

What I’m watching

Wind River (Amazon, YouTube), written and directed by the incredible Taylor Sheridan, co-creator of Yellowstone. This is an excellent but very dark movie. It received a lengthy eight-minute standing ovation at the end of its premiere in the Un Certain Regard competition of the Cannes film festival. Description: “A chilling murder mystery set in the icy backwoods of a Native American Reservation, starring Elizabeth Olsen and Jeremy Renner (@JeremyRenner).” You can find the trailer here. Not suitable for family viewing.

Quote I’m pondering

“And now that you don’t have to be perfect, you can be good.”
John Steinbeck, East of Eden

And, as always, please give me feedback on Twitter. Which bullet above is your favorite? What do you want more or less of? Other suggestions? Please let me know. Just send a tweet to @tferriss and put #5BulletFriday at the end so I can find it.

You can complement this edition of 5-Bullet Friday with my mind-bending interview with Donald Hoffman, professor emeritus of cognitive sciences at the University of California, Irvine; this video of Dr. Peter Attia discussing rapamycin, a most curious drug; and this clip with iconic fiction author (e.g., The Handmaid’s Tale) Margaret Atwood.

Have a wonderful weekend, all.

Much love to you and yours,

Tim

P.S. Deal of the Week — MANSCAPED, the best in men’s grooming!

This paragraph gives me an adolescent glee to include. Ready? Here goes: MANSCAPED is bringing you the total package to ensure your package is the perfect package. No, I didn’t come up with that line… but I tested and loved their products, so I can vouch that I’m still intact and ready for my centerfold shoot. Was it scary? Yes. Was it worth it? Also yes. My girlfriend makes the effort, so I figured it was only fair. MANSCAPED is the most effective way to keep clean, pristine, and looking like a dream through the sweatiest summer months. 5-Bullet Friday
The latest from author and investor Tim Ferriss

Hi All!

Here is your weekly dose of 5-Bullet Friday, a list of what I’m pondering and exploring. If you enjoy it, please feel free to forward this along to friends.

What I’m reading

How to Keep Your Cool: An Ancient Guide to Anger Management (The Painted Porch, Audible). Thanks to Ryan Holiday (@RyanHoliday) for this recommendation. From the official description: “In his essay ‘On Anger’ (De Ira), the Roman Stoic thinker Seneca (c. 4 BC–AD 65) argues that anger is the most destructive passion: ‘No plague has cost the human race more dear.’ This was proved by his own life, which he barely preserved under one wrathful emperor, Caligula, and lost under a second, Nero. This splendid new translation of essential selections from ‘On Anger,’ presented with an enlightening introduction, offers listeners a timeless guide to avoiding and managing anger.” I found this book extremely helpful. The language and examples are sometimes dated, of course, but the principles are timeless.

For more Seneca, check out The Tao of Seneca, which I’ve put together as a small thank-you gesture for all of my readers. All three volumes are available for free.

What I’m watching

Night of the Mini Dead(S3E4) from Love, Death & Robots. If you don’t have Netflix, here is a great taste on YouTube. The series’ description from Wikipedia: “Love, Death & Robots (stylized as LOVE DEATH + R⬤BOTS, and represented in emoji form as ❤️💀🤖) is an adult animated anthology streaming television series created by Tim Miller. Produced by Blur Studio, it consists of stand-alone episodes that feature different narrative and animation styles and are produced by different animation studios from a range of countries, exploring diverse genres, particularly comedy, horror, science fiction, and fantasy.”

Podcast episode I’m listening to

TaskRabbit: Leah Solivan(Apple Podcasts, Spotify) on How I Built This with Guy Raz. Pair this episode with Guy Raz on The Tim Ferriss Show or my interview with famed investor Ann Miura-Ko, whose very first investment was TaskRabbit.

Article I’m reading and sharing

These Mormons Have Found a New Faith — in Magic Mushrooms” by Cassady Rosenblum for Rolling Stone. Worshippers are leaving the Church of Latter-day Saints in record numbers, and some are finding a new kind relationship with the divine through a psilocybin church co-founded by a man who was for years one of the most powerful Republicans in the Utah State Legislature. It’s a fascinating story about faith, mushrooms, and Mormonism.

Why am I excited about this piece? First, it’s the first published piece out of the Ferriss-UC Berkeley Psychedelic Journalism Fellowship. Second, it’s Cassady’s first-ever magazine article, and Rolling Stone increased her word count from 3,500 to 7,000! That’s about as big as it gets, and it vastly exceeded any hopes I could’ve had. Cassady hit a home run, and I’m really excited to see what she and other Fellows do next.

Journalists: have a good psychedelics story? Apply for a $10,000 reporting grant from the newly established Ferriss-UC Berkeley Psychedelic Journalism Fellowship at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism. Applications are due July 31. Open to both print and audio journalists. To apply, you’ll need a compelling story pitch, clips, and two letters of recommendation. Click here for more details.

Quote I’m pondering

“The Art of Peace begins with you. Work on yourself and your appointed task in the Art of Peace. Everyone has a spirit that can be refined, a body that can be trained in some manner, a suitable path to follow. You are here for no other purpose than to realize your inner divinity and manifest your inner enlightenment. Foster peace in your own life and then apply the Art to all that you encounter.”
Morihei Ueshiba, founder of aikido (Source: The Art of Peace). Great reminder to start with the person in the mirror

And, as always, please give me feedback on Twitter. Which bullet above is your favorite? What do you want more or less of? Other suggestions? Please let me know. Just send a tweet to @tferriss and put #5BulletFriday at the end so I can find it.

You can complement this edition of 5-Bullet Friday with what I consider “Psychedelics 101;” my first interview with How to Change Your Mind author Michael Pollan on the science of psychedelics; and Trip of Compassion, a powerful documentary on healing trauma with MDMA.

Have a wonderful weekend, all.

Much love to you and yours,

Tim

P.S. Deal of the Week — Eight Sleep Pod Pro Cover!

Good sleep is one of the keys to unlocking your maximum potential. More than 30% of Americans struggle with sleep, and I’m a member of that sad group. Temperature is one of the main causes of poor sleep, and heat is my nemesis. I’ve suffered for decades, tossing and turning, throwing blankets off, pulling them back on, and repeating ad nauseam. Now, there’s a simple way to sleep at the perfect temperature, and it’s a device I use myself—the Pod Pro Cover by Eight Sleep. It pairs dynamic cooling and heating with biometric tracking to offer the most advanced (and user-friendly) solution on the market. I’ve been using it for more than a year. Add the Pod Pro Cover to your current mattress and start sleeping as cool as 55°F or as hot as 110°F. It also splits your bed in half, so your partner can choose a totally different temp. The technology adjusts the temperature of each side of the bed based on your sleep stages, biometrics, and bedroom temperature, reacting intelligently to create the optimal sleeping environment.

Eight Sleep is giving subscribers to 5-Bullet Friday $350 off(!) of the Pod Pro Cover. This very special offer is valid until 11:59 PM ET on July 26th. Click here to claim this deal and unlock your full potential through optimal sleep.

🎧 New podcast episode:
Signal Over Noise with Noah Feldman — The War in Ukraine (Recap and Predictions), The Machiavelli of Maryland, Best Books to Understand Geopolitics, The Battles for Free Speech on Social Media, Metaverse Challenges, and More

I rarely cover current events on this podcast, but this is a new experiment.

To avoid overwhelm, I do not track the news 24/7 with doom scrolling. Rather, I depend on conversations with my smartest friends to find the signal in the noise. The following exchange with Noah Feldman (@NoahRFeldman) is an example of such a conversation, very similar to what we would have offline, and I wanted to share it with you. I learned a ton and changed my thinking a lot, which I always do.

Noah Feldman is a Harvard professor, ethical philosopher and advisor, public intellectual, religious scholar and historian, and author of 10 books, including his latest, The Broken Constitution: Lincoln, Slavery, and the Refounding of America. You can find my interview with him at tim.blog/noah.

Noah is the founder of Ethical Compass, which helps clients like Facebook and eBay improve ethical decision-making by creating and implementing new governance solutions. Noah conceived and designed the Facebook Oversight Board and continues to advise Facebook on ethics and governance issues.

Feldman is host of the Deep Background podcast, a policy and public affairs columnist for Bloomberg Opinion, and a former contributing writer for The New York Times. He served as senior constitutional advisor to the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq and subsequently advised members of the Iraqi Governing Council on the drafting of Iraq’s interim constitution.

He earned his A.B. summa cum laude from Harvard, finishing first in his class. Selected as a Rhodes Scholar, he earned a DPhil from Oxford University, writing his dissertation on Aristotle’s Ethics. He received his JD from Yale Law School and clerked for Justice David Souter of the US Supreme Court.

He is the author of 10 books, including Divided by God: America’s Church-State Problem—and What We Should Do About It; What We Owe Iraq: War and the Ethics of Nation Building; Cool War: The United States, China, and the Future of Global Competition; Scorpions: The Battles and Triumphs of FDR’s Great Supreme Court Justices; and The Three Lives of James Madison: Genius, Partisan, President.

Please let me know what you think of this experimental format by sending me feedback on Twitter @tferriss. Do you love it? Do you hate it? Have suggestions for improvement? The usual long-form interviews with evergreen questions will still be the default and bread and butter of this podcast, but if you like this, I could see doing more of them, perhaps once a month or once every two months. It’s just an easy way to get caught up without drowning in news.

Please enjoy!

5-Bullet Friday
The latest from author and investor Tim Ferriss

Hi All!

Here is your weekly dose of 5-Bullet Friday, a list of what I’m pondering and exploring. I included a sixth bullet for fun.

What I’m reading

The Bronc-busting, Cow-punching, Death-defying Legend of Boots O’Nealby Christian Wallace for Texas Monthly. This is a thought-provoking portrait of someone who lives to do his work and who can’t imagine doing otherwise. Here’s the opening paragraph: “The sun is not yet up when Boots O’Neal starts his workday. As the 89-year-old cowboy readies his mount in the predawn quiet, he stuffs his hands into well-worn leather gloves. His dark chaps are decorated with fringe, a slight sheen on the right hip where his nylon rope has polished the leather over the years. He pulls down his silverbelly hat and grunts his way onto the saddle, planting his tall-topped boots in the stirrups. The horse he’s riding today is a dark sorrel named Cool. Together they wait, as the cowboy saying goes, just ‘cryin’ for daylight.’”

What I’m listening to

Still Not Dead (YouTube, Spotify) by Willie Nelson (@WillieNelson). I saw Willie Nelson play live at Austin City Limits (ACL) in 2019. At 89 years young, the same age as Boots O’Neal, Willie can still bring down the house.

What I’m studying

South Korea’s archery invincibility explained.” I have recently become deeply interested in South Korean archers. Why? Here’s how The New York Times put it: “For South Korean archers, winning Olympic gold medals feels almost like a given—they have claimed 23 of the 34 golds awarded in the sport since 1984. … The South Korean archery team has won gold medals at every Summer Olympics since 1984. The women’s team has been particularly dominant, winning gold eight straight times since the team event made its debut in 1988 in Seoul. In 2016, the men’s and women’s teams swept the gold medals in the team and individual events at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.” Watch the above video for more on their training systems.

South Korean coaches also combine the latest high-tech gadgetry with low-tech mental toughness training (psyche breaking and filtering?), some of which is described in this article: South Korean archers banned for pulling out of training.” Here’s the opening lede, which gives you the gist: “South Korea’s world-class archers were ordered to clean up city sewage, stay up all night, stare at dead bodies in a crematory and climb a mountain with a rubber dinghy on their backs.”

Some fascinating bits from The New York Times article:

The team is famous in the archery world for the depth and detail of its preparations. National coaches employ wind machines and pump artificial noise (crowd sounds, camera shutters) through speakers to simulate adverse environmental conditions athletes might encounter in competition.

Before the Rio Games in 2016, the archers trained at a live baseball game, an unorthodox way to expose them to a pressure cooker atmosphere. This spring, practice sessions at the national training center in Jincheon have taken place in an arena modeled after the one they’ll see in Tokyo. Staff members installed video screens, audience stands and banners where they are likely to be positioned at the Olympics. Simulated loudspeaker announcements in English and Japanese further set the mood.

‘Our goal is zero-defect training,’ said Jang Young-sool, the vice president of the Korea Archery Association.”

Test I’ve been doing every week or so

Dominant eye test: How to find your dominant eye.” I’m right-handed but left-eye dominant, which is sometimes referred to as “cross dominance.” This can make a mess of things, which is part of why I explored eye dominance for sports with experts in The 4-Hour Chef: The Simple Path to Cooking Like a Pro, Learning Anything, and Living the Good Life (a book title I regret, as the book is mostly focused on meta-learning/accelerated learning). From 2009–2010, I was consistently missing basketball shots by a few inches until I made adjustments for cross dominance with Rick Torbett. And this can apply to a multitude of things, including photography, marksmanship, and… archery. But, you might rightly ask, if I already know I’m left-eye dominant, why on earth would I perform this test over and over again?

Well, a few months ago, I created two identical recurve bow setups, one for left-handed use and one for right-handed use. I’ve been alternating both in every workout, keeping both eyes open throughout, to try to determine if I should switch to a left-handed stance to match my left-eye dominance (which some excellent archers have suggested) or keep my default right-handed stance (which other excellent archers have recommended). Which is more accurate? Once getting over the basic awkwardness of shooting left-handed, it really seems to depend on the day or week. After one day of far better right-handed shooting, I repeated the eye-dominance test during a rest break, and it repeatedly indicated… right-eye dominance! I was flabbergasted and did a bunch of Googling to see if I was making a mistake or fooling myself, but it does seem that eye dominance can switch, at least anecdotally on archery forums. Presently, I seem to be left-eye dominant at least 80% of the time, but it’s not 100%. I assumed switching was impossible, but it just goes to show you how many “impossibles” are nothing of the sort. I find it all very exciting.

Anniversary I’m thinking about

Exactly seven years ago, I had my first ride with my best friend, Molly. To celebrate, I updated my header photo on the blog. My girlfriend said it looks like an engagement photo shoot. If you’ve never done a deep dive on the blog (more than 1,000 posts since 2006!), you can click here for some of the most popular of all time, categorized by theme. Or if you want to skip the multiple steps, here they are:

Quote I’m pondering

“I never even thought about whether or not they understand what I’m doing. … The emotional reaction is all that matters. As long as there’s some feeling of communication, it isn’t necessary that it be understood.”
John Coltrane

You can complement this edition of 5-Bullet Friday with more photos from the engagement photo shoot with Molly pup, this video on teaching Molly fun tricks, and my podcast interview with master dog trainer Susan Garrett.

I started tracking my glucose years ago to learn more about what I should and shouldn’t be eating (including quantities, time of day, etc.), based on objective data from my own unique physiology. To give just one example, I was surprised to see how dramatically mildly large meals spiked my blood sugar, even when low-glycemic overall. Since keeping my blood sugar stable is critical to my daily performance and long-term health goals, these are insights I pay attention to. Poor glucose control is associated with a number of chronic conditions like diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, and obesity. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Levels has a world-class team and group of advisors backing them, including names like multi-time podcast guest Dr. Dominic D’Agostino and former SpaceX engineer Josh Clemente, who you may have heard on Kevin Rose’s podcast. To learn more about Levels and using a CGM to help personalize and optimize your diet, click here. At the link, you will see next steps to join Levels at the top, and you can scroll down to learn about features and much more.
