Just one question

Happy Monday folks! I know you’re all eager for updates about my mallet finger injury, but you’ll just have to cope with that suspense for a bit.

All I’ve got for you is a single question: what do you think of this idea?

Have a great week everybody!

Love,
Kirby

P.S. I have a major new article, AI and The Shock of the New.

The Midlife Remix

Hi there, I’m Kirby Ferguson! I’m best known for the series Everything is a Remix. I’m revamping my work and my life. I’m seeking financial stability and personal fulfillment in the second act of life. I’m thinking aloud about all of this here. I might later revise, discard, or ridicule anything said.

The results are in!

Folks, thank you so much to all of you who responded to last week’s poll! This poll had the most responses I’ve ever gotten. Without further ado, here are the results!

  • Almost half of you were very enthusiastic about this idea.

  • About a quarter of you were interested but still needed to hear more.

  • And 7.5% loved this idea and would pay for it now.

  • So 80.5% of you liked this idea.

  • 15.5% thought the idea sounded good but were not personally interested in it.

  • And 4% don’t think the idea is worth pursuing.

  • So 19.5% weren’t that into the idea.

Overall, a pretty enthusiastic response! 80.5% is pretty high approval and, as I said, this was about double the response rate I usually get from polls.

I’ll continue to brew on this topic. Stay tuned for more!

In the meantime, I have another question!

Rick Rubin

Read Like an Artist

People don’t think of reading as creative. It’s considered passive, consumptive. Reading certainly can be those things, but it can also be highly creative if you do it the right way.

The simple key to creative reading is this: take notes. Make highlights and write notes. E-books are especially great for this and Readwise is the best tool to manage those notes. Your book highlights and notes should be part of a notes system that also includes your own notes drawn from your ideas, life, and experiences. Out of this brew of your thoughts and the thoughts of others, all sorts of ideas will appear.

Creating is so much harder if you don’t take notes. You’re perpetually stuck in the “blank page” phase, staring into the void and waiting for a lightning bolt of inspiration.

Another key to creative reading that I’ve discovered is this: timing is everything. Read the book when it’s time to read the book.

I pre-ordered Rick Rubin’s The Creative Act as soon as I saw it was coming and I was thrilled to see it pop up in my Kindle library later. Nonetheless, I didn’t dive in, I set it aside.

There are a special few books, movies, and albums that I save until it’s the right time to experience them. How do you know that moment has come? I dunno, it’s a feeling, but I think this feeling comes when the work fits within my current interests and might have a role to play.

The time for The Creative Act recently arrived and I’ve been slowly reading it over recent weeks. It’s an inspiring book regardless of how you read it, but saving it for this moment made it explosive for me. It’s inspired thousands of words of writing and many good creative insights.

The first thing it inspired came after reading this passage.

If you know what you want to do and you do it, that’s the work of a craftsman. If you begin with a question and use it to guide an adventure of discovery, that’s the work of the artist.

This idea combined with a recent conversation I had with my friend Andy Allen, then this article, “Art, Craft, and AI,” came flowing out. I think this piece is a strong insight, but it’s also an early expression and it’ll grow into something bigger and better

The Creative Act also inspired a new course idea, which I asked you all about in last week’s question. (You’re still welcome to answer if you want.) We’ll see what comes of that.

Because I read The Creative Act when it felt right (and made notes!), the book triggered countless ideas, many of which will continue to grow for months to come.

I know exactly what most of you are thinking. “Before you go, pleeeeeeze tell me more about your mallet finger injury!!!”

Oh folks, I can’t give away all the primo content in a single newsletter. I’ll dispense that gold in a future installment.

Love,
K

P.S. Don’t forget to answer this question!

The Midlife Remix

Hi there, I’m Kirby Ferguson! I’m best known for the series Everything is a Remix. I’m seeking financial stability and personal fulfillment in the second act of life. These thoughts are a work in progress.

The latest!

Happy Monday, folks! First off, here’s the latest stuff from me!

You can always head to the articles section of the Everything is a Remix site to see what’s new. I typically update twice a week.

More results!

Last week I ran another poll. I pitched you this idea.

I'm considering creating a live virtual training event that teaches you absolutely everything I know about making videos and writing in the Everything is a Remix style.

I then asked this question: Would you buy this at a premium price?

It’s not a question I expected to generate many yeses... and it didn’t! This would be an uber-niche product with a small audience and, thus, a high price tag.

In total, 17 of you said “yes, I would pay a premium price for this.”

This might sound small, but this response is interesting to me. What I initially had in mind for this class was something like 12 people for $1200 each. So this is potentially worthwhile and I’ll be giving it further thought.

Should it happen, this course will certainly be an extraordinary and perhaps one-time-only experience. If you’d like to see it happen and you’d pay a premium price for it, you can still respond to the poll.

Operation 11th Hour:
Month 2 Update!

I have one quarter (January - March) to establish a viable business producing educational content. I’ve dubbed this mission… Operation 11th Hour!

Month 2 is complete! How’d it go?

The short answer is: I survived!

Operation 11th Hour basically entered a holding pattern. In January I could see that course sales would be much slower in February. I didn’t yet have a good plan to boost sales and get in front of new eyeballs.

So I elected to buy some time. I rallied some freelance work, coaching, and consulting to fill the hole… and it worked. (However, because I diverted time to this other work, course revenue probably dropped even further.)

The end result: February generated almost as much revenue as January. I remain in the same position as at the end of Month 1, which I described as “slightly good.” I’m in a decent place for the short term, but staying at the “slightly good” level will not cut it. The trend line’s gotta up.

What’s in store for Month 3? It might look a lot like this month because I’ll still be working on those freelance projects, which will take most of my time.

I definitely need to change things up and get fresh revenue flowing. Month 3 would be successful if I could generate some new momentum from the educational work while working on freelance projects.

Wish me luck, folks! I wish you all the same and see you next week!

Love,
K

P.S. You can still respond to last week’s question!

The Midlife Remix

Hi there, I’m Kirby Ferguson! I’m best known for the series Everything is a Remix. I’m seeking financial stability and personal fulfillment in the second act of life. These thoughts are a work in progress.

Golden Years

Nora and I now live in Southern California with our two-year-old son, Kirby – otherwise known as Little Kirby. These are the Golden Years of my life in every way.

The days are sun-drenched. Sounds glorious – and it kinda is – but it’s also not ideal for my extremely Celtic skin.

And we've been fortunate to spend a lot of time with our little blonde golden boy in his early years, as his mind and body and soul are exploding.

Life could so so easily be entirely different.

Little Kirby is our Miracle Child. It was difficult for us to conceive. Nora willed him into existence.

We were frighteningly lucky with his birth. If different choices had been made, I could have driven home alone that day.

I've never been a religious person, but there's no other way to say it: I am blessed.

I am an Old Dad. I was 49 when Little Kirby was born. The years were already passing a lot faster than they used to. And since I've become a parent, the chapters fly past.

I've already lost my newborn, in a blur, then my infant. I'm now in the toddler chapter. In no time at all, this will be the distant past too.

When I remember this era, I'll remember its golden haze. This precious time in golden Southern California with Nora and my golden boy son. It's not a place I planned to be, I don't know how long this will last. It's all so heartbreakingly fleeting.

It's still happening but I miss it so much already.

Love,
K

P.S. Nora and I take a lot of photos and videos of Little Kirby. One night I was looking at them while listening to music. "Gold Star Mothers" by Hammock started playing and the combination of that song and the video clip I happened to be looking at vividly captured this time. I combined them in this video. This is what life feels like now.

What’s worked, what hasn’t, and what I’m going to do about it͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌

The Midlife Remix

Hi there, I’m Kirby Ferguson! I’m best known for the series Everything is a Remix. I’m seeking financial stability and personal fulfillment in the second act of life. These thoughts are a work in progress.

The Spring Reset

It’s springtime, folks! And for those of you in the southern hemisphere, happy fall! Cold and decay! Hooray!!!

Regardless of your GPS coordinates, it’s a new season and it’s the perfect time to reset. If you’re off-track, let’s get on track. If you’re on track, let’s level up.

Remember, this can be about anything, not just work or creative projects. If you need to do better with your health or your family or relationship or social life or community or even hobby, a new season is a great opportunity to create change.

The Good

Here’s where I’m at. This is all about business because that’s my focus this year.

I’ve done decently thus far this year – or as I’ve said before, slightly good. Here are my wins, some big, some small.

  • I started the year with a bang and delivered a two-hour-plus video course about ChatGPT, on time, on Christmas Day. I executed a good launch. The course has been well-received and some well-known people took it.

  • I ventured into areas outside my wheelhouse, like Google Ads and targeted emails, and scored some small wins.

  • The Everything is a Remix newsletter was a priority and generated good growth.

  • I’ve met loads of amazing people.

  • After course income started to decline, I was able to quickly secure freelance work.

  • Consistency has long been a weakness of mine, but I’ve put out two articles every week all year.

  • I’m writing the most and the most easily I have in my life.

The less-good and what I’m going to do about it

Here are the struggles I’ve had and how I’ll address them.

Overall, after a strong start, momentum has dipped. Some of this is because I’m working on other projects, but that’s not the only cause.

  • Course sales dropped more than I would like. I need to refocus on sales and marketing and establish consistency.

  • My social media efforts have not delivered much and I’m occasionally making myself cringe with stuff I’m posting. (To be clear, selling stuff requires enduring some cringe.) I’m mostly shelving social for now and just posting updates about new stuff.

  • I’m gonna launch something new! This will be something I’m very excited about and I hope you will be too. It’ll be my biggest and best product yet.

But the biggest change I’m going to make is this.

Video returns to the center of my life

I’ve written a lot this quarter, more than I ever have before. I’ve really developed that muscle. But there are two problems.

  • It hasn’t amounted to much.

  • I don’t think I’m especially great at it.

Writing feels partial to me, like a prototype. With some exceptions, I often feel like something is missing from what I write.

Now, I don’t love every video I’ve made. But I love plenty of them and I like the rest. It’s easy for me to make stuff I like in video form.

I can’t escape video. I’m a lifer.

This might sound like an obvious conclusion, because, y’know, I’m a filmmaker. But this is a major change in my work.

The way I made videos before was insanely labor-intensive. Everything is a Remix, This is Not a Conspiracy Theory, all the video-essay style stuff – each of those videos took months and there was no conceivable way to make them faster. They weren’t working well enough to justify that kind of investment. I had to let that kind of work go and try something more efficient, writing. Writing has gotten faster and easier for me and now I think I can adapt that material into easier-to-produce videos.

And I now have a business model. Before I only had videos. Video is possible again if I can make it in a reasonable amount of time and if it can serve the business.

So I’m trying that next! I’ve already launched a new video, which you can see below. (It’s a version of the ChatGPT course content.)

I’m aiming to publish a new video every two weeks, but the quantity-quality balance is not settled.

So that’s my major course correction. All of you will, of course, be the first to see how this goes.

Have a great week everyone!
Kirby

P.S. Yes, I have a new video about writing! It’s a version of the ChatGPT course content.

Everything is a Remix

Hi there, I’m Kirby Ferguson! I’m best known for the series Everything is a Remix. I’m seeking financial stability and personal fulfillment in the second act of life. These thoughts are a work in progress.

“The Years Pass Like Months.” Why Does Time Speed Up?

When I was in my mid-twenties, I worked as a low-level graphic designer and technician (Mac nerd) at a printing plant in a tiny town in Nova Scotia, Canada. I made hundreds of newspaper ads for a couple of years, then graduated to pizza flyers and fishing equipment catalogs.

Places like this pretty much don’t exist now. Guys would smoke cigarettes while standing beside literal tons of highly flammable newsprint. Some folks were clearly alcoholics and that was ignored so long it didn’t get out of hand.

The guy who serviced the vending machines was a fun character. He had friends at the plant and dropped in during his breaks. He was a huge, powerful, big-bearded man with a potbelly that stretched thin the mid-section of his t-shirt.

I would guess now that he was probably 60-ish – or maybe 50-ish with a lotta miles on him.

He was a light-hearted guy who loved small talk and jokes. But one day he was earnest and I’ve remembered what he said ever since.

“Time speeds up when you’re older. It’s all so fast now. The years… they pass like months.”

I’d never heard of such a thing. Time was… time, right? You get older and older faster and faster? It gave me an existential chill. Especially because I instantly knew he was right.

As a kid, every day was a long and winding adventure. A year was an infinity.

By the time I’d heard this guy’s insight, my thirtieth year was approaching and I was noticing how quickly the odometer was spinning. As the decades have passed since it’s just gotten faster.

Time accelerates as we age. Days blend together. Did we go to the play gym yesterday or the day before? A week begins then it’s over. You get used to being in your 40s, then you’re in your 50s.

Each year of your life passes a bit more quickly than the one before.

I’d never considered that I could do anything about this.

I’ve been listening to Moshe Bar’s fantastic book Mindwandering and he thinks you actually can do something about it.

Why do the years pass more quickly as we get older?

Bar thinks one of the reasons time speeds up is because we experience less and less novelty. We’ve seen so much that we engage less and less with the real world and spend more and more time in our mind’s perception of the world. We increasingly look at our mental map, not the territory around us.

I’ll also add: we vaporize thousands of hours on phones, TV, and video games. This is huge.

Bar believes when you spend less time lost in your interior monologue, time slows down.

One way to do this is through mindfulness meditation. (If you’re curious, just search. There are loads of resources out there.)

But it’s even simpler than that. We all know how to quiet our minds. Stop talking to yourself.

When you notice your mind jabbering away about nonsense, let it go. Begin to recognize when your mind is churning and let the thoughts pass. Don’t say anything in your head.

Your mind will always churn, that’s what it’s supposed to do. It’s trying to make meaning and plot your future. You can only reign it in.

We all have to work, parent, study, caretake, et cetera. Sometimes you need to talk in your head while doing these things. But when you don’t have to, don’t.

How do you slow down time?

The answer is simple: think less, experience more.

This can feel boring. Accept the initial discomfort.

Try this out this week. Quiet your mind. Slow it down. It isn’t easy to do, but it is simple to work at and improve.

Oh, and more important than slowing time down: it feels better. It’s a better life.

Love,
K

Everything is a Remix

Hi there, I’m Kirby Ferguson! I’m best known for the series Everything is a Remix. I’m seeking financial stability and personal fulfillment in the second act of life. These thoughts are a work in progress.

Operation 11th Hour Q1 Results

Ladies and gentlemen, Q1 of Operation 11th Hour is complete! What happened?

The Results

Here’s how Operation 11th Hour works. In 2024, I need to establish a viable business. Every quarter I evaluate results and assign a pass or fail grade. A pass grade means I live to fight another quarter. A fail grade means game over, time to do something else.

TLDR: January worked; February and March were saved by freelance work

January was my best month of the quarter. The ChatGPT course had a good launch. I got 65% of what would have been a great month. All in all, a decent start.

Course sales dropped after January but have been a stable and substantial source of revenue since. When selling online, a common fate is sales dropping to literally zero after launch. It’s a small but significant win that I’m avoiding that.

Freelance work saved me for the rest of the quarter. Without it, I could be sunk already. (The comparison is a bit tricky, though, because I also had much less time to work on the business.)

The Toughest Challenge

This quarter was like running a marathon with a sprained ankle.

Family illness was unbelievable. Some of this was my own illness, but the biggest challenge was extra caretaking from missed school days and sleepless nights with Little Kirby.

Before pre-school, for a year and a half, Little Kirby was sick twice. Since starting pre-school, he’s been sick perhaps 8 times. I’ve honestly lost track. Every other week it’s something new. After a recent cold, he went back to school for one day and immediately caught a long-lasting stomach virus.

The stomach bugs are extra awful for us parents because of, let’s just say, messes. Thumbs down. Zero stars.

Nora and I catch most, but not all, of the bugs Kirby brings into the house. I was some version of sick for all but one of the shoots I did for the ChatGPT course. As I write this, I’m at home with Little K as he recovers from the latest stomach bug.

What worked, what didn’t

I tried a variety of experiments this quarter. Some worked, most didn’t.

These worked.

The major thing that didn’t work was writing. I tried cranking out lots of writing. All of this was outperformed by a single video I posted on YouTube, which didn’t even do that well views-wise. Video content will be a priority in Q2.

Q1 Grade: Pass

For Quarter 1 of Operation 11th Hour I scored a pass.

BUT!

I’m at the low end of where I need to be. I can’t stay here. I need to make more revenue next quarter.

An extra challenge: I need to achieve this while still doing freelance work because that work is still ongoing.

I live to fight another quarter! I couldn’t have done it without your support. Sincerely, thank you to every one of you.

What’s next? An exciting new thing! I’ll start telling you about it next week.

Love,
k

Hi there, I’m Kirby Ferguson! I’m best known for the series Everything is a Remix. I’m seeking financial stability and personal fulfillment in the second act of life. These thoughts are a work in progress.

What’s next?

Folks, welcome back, and happy Monday!

First off, I have an on-demand creativity course in the works! It will be far and away the best creativity course in not only this universe but all parallel universes too. I’ve already written thousands of words for it, it’s over a decade in the making, it’s going to be extraordinary.

I have yet to name it and I’d love your input. Please take a second to let me know which name you like – or donate your free ideas. Thanks!

Which path to take?

If you’re wondering if you missed last week’s email, you did not! I never sent that one out. Here’s what happened.

I wrote an email announcing pre-orders for a new product. It was all set to go.

But something didn’t feel quite right. It felt rushed – and not in a good way.

This year, I’ve mostly embraced rushing. Rushing is good. Not everything has to be perfect. I make mistakes and learn. It’s mostly typos – the ones in email subject lines are especially irritating for me. (Note: even Grammarly doesn’t catch all errors.)

But those are minor errors. This could have been a more serious mistake. If something is wrong with my pricing or what I promise to deliver, that’s a real problem for the business.

I’m pumping the breaks just a bit on the next launch. The next launch is coming very shortly, but I have to:

  1. Choose which product to launch first

  2. Price it right and ideally, have a couple pricing tiers (which I’ve never done before)

The two possible products are:

  1. The creativity course I mentioned at the start. This would be an on-demand video course, perhaps with a live teaching option.

  2. Everything I Know About Making Videos. This is a niche product. It will be aimed at a tiny audience and have a premium price tag. This would perhaps be a cohort-based course with a limited number of seats. It might be a one-time-only offering.

(Both of these were determined to be viable based on your feedback. Thank you all!)

Nora is better at pragmatic thinking than I am. She’s been helping me figure out pricing and structure, and determine which one makes the most sense to do next.

Both of these are likely to come this year, I just don’t know the order yet.

Gonna leave it at that! Super exciting launch is coming soon! Meanwhile, I’m neck-deep with two commission videos that I hope to wrap in the next few weeks.

Have an awesome week everyone!

Love,
Kirby

P.S. Help me name my next thing!

Answers to anticipated questions

What if the schedule doesn’t fit my schedule?
Alas, the schedule can’t fit every schedule or time zone. However, you can download the sessions afterward and follow along on your own schedule.

What will I produce in this class?
You can pursue whatever goal you want, but I recommend you, y’know, create a video! If you don’t have a project ready to go, I’ll help you make one up. It doesn’t have to be amazing, it’s an exercise.

Do I have to be a video maker?
The class is aimed at people making videos, but lots of what I teach could apply equally well to text, audio, visual, or other projects. I’ll cover writing, knowledge management, research and how to manage small but complex projects.

Is this a video editing course?
This is not a video editing course. There are loads of ways to learn video editing software. There will be some video editing tips and tricks, but you’ll need to learn how to use that software on your own. I won’t be doing comprehensive instruction on any particular software.

Do I have to use a particular video editing software?
No, use whatever you want. I’m experienced with Davinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, and Final Cut and will feature them all.

What else will I learn?
That’s still developing but here’s a bit more!

  • The complete workflow for making a video essay in the Everything is a Remix style

  • How to get a powerhouse software suite for 70 bucks (Mac or Windows). No Adobe, no subscriptions!

  • How to source high-quality clips and media

  • How to obey copyright… or safely bend the rules

Everything is a Remix

Welcome to a special Thursday edition of The Midlife Remix! Why publish on Thursday? Because I’ve been sick AGAIN. The parade of illness from little Kirby’s preschool continues into the spring. Anyway, onward!

Cohort enrollment continues

Case you haven’t heard, I launched pre-orders for my very first cohort class! It’s called Everything I Know About Making Videos and it’s exactly what it sounds like.

You can save $550 dollars when you pre-order. There are six pre-order slots remaining. Get ’em while you can!

This is a live, interactive six-week event that I might never do again. Read more about it here.

If you have any questions about the course, just reply to this email.

Meet Your Fellow Subscribers

There are many, many great things about running a good ol’ fashioned email newsletter, but one of the best is that anybody can reply. I’ve heard from many hundreds of you over the years. I read every one of these emails and whenever I can, I reply back.

A drawback of the email newsletter is that you only from me, not each other. So I’d like to introduce you to some of the other subscribers to this newsletter. These are some of the awesome entrepreneurs, freelancers, educators, and makers who I’ve had the honor of having in my audience for years.

  • Paul Anderson is an educational consultant who has a huge YouTube channel. Paul recently launched a product that was inspired… by me! See below for photographic evidence. Check out Paul’s new systems thinking toy, Switch Its!

These are just the people I’ve been in contact with in the last little while! I am missing many of you in this list.

See you all again on Monday! Assuming I’m not stricken by preschool plague...

Love,
k

Everything is a Remix

I finally saw Civil War and…

Howdy folks and happy Monday!

This week is looking up! I’m free of a stomach virus and little Kirby is back at preschool! I’m gonna type quickly before the next ailment lands.

Case you missed it: I’ve launched pre-orders for my debut cohort class, Everything I Know About Making Videos. By pre-ordering now, you’ll save a massive $550. But hurry, there are only six pre-order slots remaining.

This immersive program covers it all – from ideation to distribution. I’ll share my proven strategies for scripting, filming, and editing. Don’t miss this chance to learn from an OG and elevate your skills.

Click here to claim your slot before they’re gone.

I finally saw Civil War and…

Could be some minor spoilers ahead

I’m a huge Alex Garland fan. I especially love his recent-ish sci-fi projects: Annihilation, Devs, and above all, Ex Machina, which I thought was a classic before I stood up from my theater seat.

If you’ve been watching my stuff over the years, you’ve probably noticed a fixation on Ex Machina. It’s here. It’s here. It’s here. I think there are more.

I’m a big Garland fan, and I’m also a big A24 fan. Ari Aster, Jonathan Glazer, and the Safdie brothers are among the best in the game. Aftersun is another film that you know is a masterpiece as soon as the credits roll. The Florida Project, another masterpiece. MoonlightEighth Grade. I could go on.

Civil War is Alex Garland’s new film and it’s an A24 production. So far, so great. I was eager to see it, but because of work and The Winter of Infinite Illness, I didn’t get to until just now.

TL;DR: it’s fine.

Some of you might be thinking: your expectations were too high, dude.

That’s not it. I already knew Aftersun was likely a masterpiece before I watched it. I’ve gone into lots of films, books, and albums expecting the sublime and still got it. Civil War just isn’t that great.

To be clear, it is quite good. The performances and filmmaking are pretty much faultless. And it contains great moments.

But the ways that it’s not good are more interesting. These are the major problems.

  • What Garland is great at doesn’t fit this material. He’s great at kinda abstract fantasy. This is gritty reality. The film is kinda on-the-nose and could use some fantasy and obliqueness. Garland is also not a world-builder, which this needed.

  • The film has almost nothing to say about politics or media. Civil War is about politics (war) and media (war journalists) and yet it has nothing much to say about either. Civil War is high concept first, and the writing is surprisingly thin and unsubstantial. It’s also kinda weirdly apolitical and toothless.

  • And finally, Civil War doesn’t feel fresh. We don’t experience anything here we’ve not seen before. It’s a war film, it’s a collapse film, it’s the savagery of humanity. This stuff has been done a lot. Even schlocky TV like The Walking Dead has done a lot of this. If you’ve seen Children of Men, you’ve already got a high bar for this stuff.

Again, Civil War is quite good, it’s better than most films, it is worth watching. But overall, I think Garland picked the wrong battle here.

See you next week everyone!

Love,
k

Finding Bliss in Creativity

Happy Monday everybody!

I have a new video! My latest is a commission for Bloomberg Law. It's about the massive and potentially game-changing litigation currently underway against social media companies. Parents, educators, and others are increasingly convinced that social media harms teens’ mental health.

My thanks to my collaborators Josh and Andrew at Bloomberg Law!

The name of my next course is…

I recently asked you all what name you preferred for my upcoming creativity course and here are the results.

With nearly double the votes, the winner was The Remix Method! I’m gonna roll with it!

As you can see in the pie chart, there were also a lot of suggestions for other names, including:

  • Remix Everything

  • The Everything is a Remix Method

  • Create: Why Great Artists Remix

  • Creativity: A Course to Debunk and Reimagine

  • And best of all, Everything Isn't Necessarily a Remix But In a Way It All Kind of Is Basically So Yeah Everything IS a Remix

Finding bliss in creativity

Aftersun

One of my fixations throughout life has been finding bliss in creative works. My level of interest has ranged from pure obsession to minor hobby, which is about the level I’m at here in the toddler-parent, make-money era.

But I think my moderate interest level isn’t just because of a lack of free time or even because I’m middle-aged and seen a lot. We seem creatively stagnant right now. I do a deep dive on this topic in an upcoming video for The New York Times. However, as you’ll see, there’s still lots of amazing work being done.

Here’s my question for you: where are you finding bliss in creativity? Or are you not finding much? The lines are open, reply to this email. I’ll try to reply to everything.

I’ll start. Here’s some of the amazing things I’ve experienced in recent months.

You can find links to the books and movies below in the blog post.

Sidenote: I saw Alex Garland’s Civil War and it was fine. Click the link to read more. (Get more articles like that via the Everything is a Remix newsletter, another weekly newsletter that focuses exclusively on creativity.)

Overall, and very oddly, I’m finding the aging medium of the novel the most exciting right now.

I recently read Nathan Hill’s The Nix, a sweeping, 2000s-style novel, what now gets called “white-guy fiction” (David Foster Wallace, Jonathan Franzen, Don Delillo, etc). I fit that demo! Hill’s book is a lighter, poppier version of that style, with a tight, propulsive plot.

Literary science fiction is the most stunning. I recently read and loved Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Children of Time, much of which is written from the perspective of highly intelligent spiders. You read that correctly.

But the 800-pound gorilla in sci fi is Liu Cixin’s Three Body Problem trilogy. I read the first book and was floored. I intended to savor the series and slowly make my way through it. Then I plowed through The Dark Forest, which is much more of an intense page-turner than the first book, and continued a fast pace through Death’s End, which I’m a quarter of the way into.

The brilliant thing about the series is the way it creates utterly baffling mysteries and then resolves them in a fascinating and entirely satisfying way.

What about the Netflix series?

I’m sorry to say, but it’s weak tea. If you’ve read the books (all of them, because it does adapt sections of all three), then it’s a fun companion.

If you’re never gonna read the books for whatever reason, the series is good but doesn’t capture the magic of the books. Read the books, then watch the series.

If you have recommendations for what to read next, send them along!

Have a great week everyone!

Love,
k

P.S. Where are you finding bliss in creative works lately? Reply and tell me!

The Midlife Remix

Happy Monday everybody! And happy summer to my fellow inhabitants of the northern hemisphere.

Alright, I am cranking on my next big project and I wanna tell you about it!

I'm Building a System for Creativity

I've been fascinated by systems since I was a teen.

The first system that captured my imagination was the Mac. Why did it feel so much better to use? And why did I feel so much better using it?

And why did Windows feel so dreary?

And then there was DOS! There were poor, wretched souls typing God-knows-what into DOS all day.

I couldn't articulate it but I knew systems were important. They didn't do your work for you, but they could make it way easier or way harder. With the right system, you were pedalling downhill.

What does a system do?

A system empowers you by providing not just tools, but a framework—a coherent and purposeful way of working, of solving problems, of imagining possibilities.

And systems aren't just software.

If you're into Getting Things Done or personal knowledge management or AGILE or bullet journalling or time blocking, these are systems. They’re mental interfaces that shape how you work.

I've told stories about systems, but I've never tried to make one myself and share it. I'm working on that now.

Introducing The Remix Method: A Creative Operating System

The Remix Method is built on the best thing I've ever done, Everything is a Remix. It's delivered in the form of a video course, along with plenty of supporting resources and tools. This is software for your mind.

The objective is to take the guesswork out of your creative process and help you consistently generate original ideas and bring your projects to life.

Everything is a Remix was the story. The Remix Method is the system. It's like open-source software for your mind – a flexible, customizable framework you can hack to suit you.

You can pre-order The Remix Method now and save 50%. Sale ends Friday, June 7th.

That’s all for this week, folks! These newsletters are published every two weeks during the summer. See you in a couple weeks!

Kirby

P.S. I also have exclusive, one-on-one coaching and mentorship opportunities. Book some time with me and I will raise your creative game. These prices end Friday as well.

The Midlife Remix

Howdy everybody and happy Tuesday!

I have a quick question for you: what is your favorite form of media? Is it movies, music, books, the net, video games, or podcasts? Let me know! (It only takes seconds.)

How I got my big idea

In case you missed it, over on the blog I’ve answered the single most popular question I’ve ever been asked: where did the idea for Everything is a Remix come from?

I’ll go way deeper in my next on-demand video course, The Remix Method, but this post covers the fundamentals.

Also recent from the blog:

Fall cohort early bird discount ending

Early bird pricing for my fall cohort class Everything I Know About Making Videos ends on Friday! Only a few pre-order spots are remaining! Order now and save $550. After they sell out (or Friday comes), the price goes up.

Join an awesome group of attendees, like Michael Taylor, the author of Prompt Engineering for Generative AI!

This live, in-person class is what it says: it’s everything I’ve learned about making videos in my two-plus decades of doing it. You can get the full course details here, including dates and curriculum.

You’ll learn directly from me, you can ask me whatever you want, and I’ll give you feedback on your work. It is unlikely I will ever run this cohort again, so get it while you can.

If you’re interested but have questions, just reply to this email!

Have an awesome week everyone! Talk soon!

The Midlife Remix

Howdy everybody and happy Tuesday!

First off, I received some lovely goodies from readers lately!

Thanks to my friend Jordan Terry who sent along this lovely Reddit thread.

Head on over to Reddit and give it an upvote!

My thanks also to my friend John Vella who sent me the video files for Matt Zoller Seitz’s 2009 Wes Anderson video essay series, The Substance of Style. This series was the biggest video influence on the original Everything is a Remix. I uploaded it to The Internet Archive for posterity. Enjoy!

And lastly, my friend Jay Acunzo has an excellent new podcast, How Stories Happen. Go check it out!

Last poll results

Here are the results of my last poll. The question was: what is your favorite media?

The top result was what I expected: movies and TV. However, books were just 2% behind – that’s basically a tie. Surprising!

I wish I knew video games were at the bottom before I made Part 3 of the newest Everything is a Remix. Whoopsie!

New release date for The Remix Method

My ambitious goal was to launch my new video course, The Remix Method, before I travel back home to Prince Edward Island, Canada for summer vacation. The course is written but I’m just starting production now, so I’m postponing the launch a bit.

The new launch date is Sept 6, 2024. I appreciate everyone’s patience and support!

I’m again offering the launch price of just $99.99 this week only. That is 60% off the full price! That price expires this Friday.

The glorious mediocrity of parenthood

Here's an aspect of parenting I never conceived of until I got here: the glorious mediocrity of it all.

By mediocre, I don't mean that it's lacking. I mean most everybody gets the same extraordinary experience.

My experience, which I would describe as "perfect," is no better than most anyone else's. Sure, our personal or professional lives might be better or worse, but our lives as parents are equally great.

Babies are babies. Toddlers are toddlers. Yes, they're all unique, but mostly they're the same. Some are harder, some are easier, but they all deliver the same bliss.

That's why parents of small children can commune with anyone who has one or has had one. It doesn't matter if that person is a cashier at Walmart or a thirty-something who’s already retired thanks to some undisclosed windfall.

Parenting small children is a communist utopia: an equal sum of joy gets doled out to us all.

As children get older this changes. The gaps between them widen, tribes form, advantages and disadvantages compound. They become just as different from each other as the rest of us. They don't play with anybody who just happens to be around.

But for now, I'm still in the same boat as most everyone else.

I've spent most of my adult life priding myself on not being like everybody else. And now that I'm the same as every other parent, I'm amazed at how much I love it. It feels good to just be another member of the tribe.

Hope everybody’s having a great summer! Talk soon!

Love,
K

The Midlife Remix

Two momentous new projects

Nora and little K at the lighthouse museum in Victoria, PEI, Canada

Hello from beautiful Prince Edward Island, Canada, folks! I’m having a fantastic summer with my family and working on two exciting projects that I can’t wait to share with you. As part of this work, I’ve been doing a deep dive on the origins of Everything is a Remix and breakthrough ideas. Let me tell you about all this!

The Remix Method

New video course coming September 6

The Remix Method is simply the creativity course I’ve always wanted. It’s not a collection of tips and tricks (although I do deliver plenty of those too). The Remix Method is a simple, comprehensive, step-by-step system designed to guide you through every stage of the creative process.

This two-hour video course is hosted by me and presented in a relaxed, fun, and accessible style. Whether you’ve never completed a creative project or you need to freshen up your process, this course will redefine how you think about creativity.

Everything I Know About Making Videos

Workshop runs September 20 - October 25, 2024

Everything I Know About Making Videos is what it says: it’s everything I know about making videos. In this six-week workshop I cover the full production process, from writing and research to editing, design, mixing audio, and more. It’s two decades of knowledge about video essay production distilled down into a single class.

This is a rare opportunity to learn directly from me about creating compelling video content. I’ll address your challenges and tailor the course to students’ needs. I have no plans to repeat this event. Visit here to learn more and to secure your spot now.

I believe in making creativity accessible to everyone. That’s why I’m offering several scholarships for those who need financial assistance. If you’re passionate about video production but need a helping hand, reply to this email with a bit about your situation for a chance to receive a scholarship. Spots are limited and will be granted by lottery.

The Origins of Everything is a Remix (Part 1)

As a teen, I struggled with originality, as I’m sure any creative person does. I idolized artists, especially musicians, and fully believed in innate talent. Some people had it. Some people didn’t. And that was your lot.

I had some talent and assumed that was my lot. Sure, I thought I could raise my game, but not a lot because I wasn’t highly gifted.

I was mystified as to how anybody could come up with anything original. This itch I had about originality and talent was what pulled me over the years to Everything is a Remix.

How do great artists and thinkers create original work? I wanted that answer.

That’s where your best ideas come from – some itch in your imagination.

Music was the gateway

Music was the gateway through which I would make my discovery. As a teen, my main thing was music. One album in particular wriggled into my mind like a parasite and slowly grew. That album was Paul’s Boutique by The Beastie Boys.

When I first heard Paul’s Boutique I couldn’t truly grasp what I was hearing, but I knew it was a collage. I knew it was samples. I didn’t think they were playing all this stuff.

Here’s why that album was transcendent for me. It was like you were hearing so much more than just a band. Because it was this crazy array of samples, from all genres. It had an awesome breadth that a band couldn’t capture. It was like the greatness of human genius smooshed together into one thing.

It really stuck with me. And I basically never heard music like that again… until almost 20 years later. I’ll talk more about that later.

Back to life

Big detour after that, I went to university, worked as a graphic designer, published lots of zines and articles. I was just trying to get better at craft. Better writer, better designer, learn new software. I was trying to find my niche.

It wasn’t until my thirties that I started to feel like, okay, let’s make something good now, let’s do something new, something people haven’t experienced before.

I was making videos at this point, and I’m pretty good but more importantly, I’m improving quickly. And I’m getting some attention. There is momentum.

For a year or so I was making comedic video blogs, I was also researching my big idea: how do original things happen?

I didn’t know it at the time, but the Immerse phase of the creative process had begun. I’ll explain what that means next time.

Have a wonderful week and enjoy your summers, everyone!
Kirby

P.S. If you want to learn my filmmaking process directly from me, Everything I Know About Making Videos is your only opportunity. Get your spot now.

The Midlife Remix

My biggest problem

Click here to watch a preview of The Remix Method

Hi everybody and welcome back!

It’s been a minute! I took a little time off from this newsletter for summer vacation and above all, to focus on completing The Remix Method – which is now live! More on that shortly.

Also, my virtual workshop Everything I Know About Making Videos starts this Friday! This is a live, six-week workshop where I teach you, yeah, everything I know about making videos. There’s still time to grab a spot, so get it while you can! (This course is totally separate from The Remix Method, by the way. It’s different content, only about making videos, and much more detailed.)

Quick sidenote

This newsletter will be returning to the schedule it had for many years: I email when I have something to share! If you want to hear from me more often, my weekly newsletter is the Everything is a Remix newsletter. Those go out every Wednesday. If you want consistent content about creativity, AI, arts and entertainment, and more, that’s the place to get it.

My biggest problem

The big event for me right now is the launch of The Remix Method.

So The Remix Method is out, it’s awesome, I’m happy… but my biggest problem reared its ugly head again on this project.

Here are the two big issues that cropped up.

  • The course took about 200 hours to make. That’s double what I planned.

  • The course shipped seven weeks later than planned.

These two issues represent a larger problem I’ve had for many years now: sprawl.

Sprawl is when a project expands after you start working on it – perhaps by many multiples. Imagine starting to run a race, and then noticing, off in the distance, the finish line rushing away from you and disappearing over the horizon.

This happens to me quite a bit on my own projects – and occasionally on client work. Another term for sprawl is “scope creep.”

I’m just now emerging from two sprawls. One was The Remix Method and the other is a video commission for a major newspaper that has dragged on for months. That one proved surprisingly difficult to define and I had to do a lot of rewrites to shape it.

Why does this keep happening?

What do these two projects have in common? The topic of creativity. I consider creativity my wheelhouse, but the topic is innately vast and this vastness creates boundary problems.

That’s my biggest problem: setting the right boundaries for projects. In other words, shaping it, defining what it is, and, even more importantly, what it is not.

I mostly set the boundaries too wide. This wastes time in a couple of ways.

  • Loads of excess material gets created that ultimately won’t fit the project. For The Remix Method, I created about 40 drafts for additional chapters.

  • Then a bunch of time and mental energy is spent adjusting the boundaries until I finally get it right.

So I know what the issue is. Why on earth do I keep falling into this trap?

It’s simple: doing interesting things requires boundaries that are a bit wide. One of my strengths as a storyteller is that I can perceive topics from a wide-angle perspective. This is one of the major reasons you’re reading me right now.

I need to find better ways to discover the right boundaries for projects before I commit to them. I won’t go into how I plan to do this and it’s still something I’m sorting out, but I’ll revisit this topic in the future.

In the meantime, here are some adjustments I’ll be making to minimize sprawl.

  • Be aware that my favorite topic, creativity, tends to have boundary issues. I got tricked this time because I know the topic so well and I figured I’d have the boundaries better defined than I did.

  • Thanks to The Remix Method, I now have a specific framework I can build on. The creation of the course has given me tighter boundaries to work within. I’ll be sticking to that terrain for a good long while.

  • Lastly and most simply: I have no plans to make a large-scale project for a bit. I’ll be keeping everything smaller for the foreseeable future.

Alright, that’s it for this time folks! See you all in a while!

My year in horror

Red Rooms (2024)

It’s Halloween, folks! So I’m putting on the ol’ film geek hat and nerding out to the best and less-than-best horror films of 2024. Let’s dive in.

My two towers: sci-fi and horror

For as long as I can remember, my favorite film genre has been science fiction. I was a Star Wars/Star Trek/Planet of the Apes kid and loved pretty much anything that was set in space. I even loved pure trash like The Black Hole, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, and the original Battlestar Galactica. Without even a wisp of irony in my eight-year-old soul, I loved the James Bond Star Wars cash-in, Moonraker.

I loved Moonraker… when I was eight.

In more recent times, films like Children of MenEx MachinaUnder the Skin, and the massively underrated Aniara rank high among my favorites. (Aniara, by the way, is way darker than almost all the horror films I’m going to mention.)

My other great love, though, was always horror. As a teen, I loved Friday the 13th, Halloween, The Evil Dead, The Exorcist, The Fly, Nightmare on Elm Street, Dawn of the Dead, The Return of the Living Dead, The Shining, The Thing, and of course, Alien, the best of both genre worlds.

Now, I can’t say that I love horror films quite like I love sci-fi films. Horror is mostly just entertainment for me. It’s a guilty pleasure, it appeals more to my gut than my mind or soul.

But still, it’s love. I’m a sucker for a good horror flick… or sometimes, even a bad one. Over the last couple months, after everybody is tucked away in bed and my brain is toast, I’ve kept up with the latest horror films. Here’s what I discovered.

The overlooked horror masterpiece of 2024…

The overlooked horror masterpiece of 2024 is Red Rooms, a French-Canadian psychological thriller. Although really, it’s not a horror film. It’s about horror–and I mean, real horror. The murders in the film are not exciting or dramatic or fun. They feel real and existentially sad.

Most horror films don’t stick with me, but this will be an exception. Red Rooms is an instant classic.

Sidenote: the film also features some of the very best “internet detective” scenes. I’ll be rewatching those.

Start with Shudder

A still from In a Violent Nature

The most bang for the buck for the horror aficionado is a Shudder subscription. Shudder has built a strong library of excellent indies. Here’s some of the best.

In a Violent Nature
This is Friday the 13th as directed by Gus Van Zant. If you understand what I just said, this movie is for you. If not, I’m guessing you’ll hate it.

Oddity
A gorgeous and elegantly executed film, in the A24 mold of upscale horror. The opening scene is a stunner.

Late Night with the Devil
This one was a big success for Shudder. I enjoyed it, though I won’t go so far as to say I think it’s good. Watch the trailer. If that looks fun to you, you should watch it.

Speak No Evil
There are now two versions of this film: the 2022 Danish original and a 2024 American remake. I enjoyed both, but the original is a strong and disturbing statement. Watch the original if you want the uncompromised vision. Watch the remake if you prefer horror that doesn’t go too hard.

The Shudder back catalog is also loaded with classics like Ring, Audition, Halloween, Friday the 13th, and the cult classic Exorcist 3.

The rest of the best and otherwise

Still from Terrifier 3, a surprise #1 box office hit in the US

Beyond the Shudder platform, here are some of the best or most noteworthy horror films of 2024.

The First Omen
A prequel to the original The Omen, this is a prime example of IP done right. The goofy B-movie tone of the original film is expanded into something far more compelling.

Longlegs
Much like Midsommar is a semi-reboot of The Wicker Man, Longlegs is a semi-reboot of The Silence of the Lambs. It’s a good movie, but a great mood piece.

And a couple tentative comments on a pair of movies I’ve not seen yet.

Terrifier 3
I’ve not yet seen Terrifier 3, but its hype inspired me to watch Terrifier 1 and 2. The ultra-low-budget first movie is unremarkable aside from the character design, but the Terrifier 2 displays some imagination and skill. I know what to expect from Terrifier 3 – 80s-style slasher shlock. Beware of the extreme gore and sadism of these films, even though it’s all pretty campy. The charm–if I can use that word–of this franchise is that it’s so oddball, but the coming copycats will likely spoil the fun.

Smile 2
I’ve also not seen Smile 2, but I really enjoyed the first film and this sequel looks promising.

Talk To Me
If missed it, the best horror film of 2023 was Talk to Me.

Skippable
Cuckoo and MaXXXine are both decent enough for serious genre fans but skippable for everybody else.

Happy Halloween everybody!!!
